7 Common Water Softener Problems (And How to Fix Them).

Water softeners are reliable machines, but like any appliance, they can develop problems over time. Here are the seven most common issues we see in San Antonio homes and what causes them.

    1. Salt Bridge Formation

A salt bridge is a hard crust that forms in the brine tank, creating a gap between the salt and the water. The system thinks it has salt, but the water cannot dissolve it. Fix: Break up the crust with a broom handle. If it keeps happening, you may need a different type of salt.

    2. Resin Bead Degradation

The resin beads that remove hardness minerals have a lifespan of 10-15 years. As they degrade, they become less effective. Fix: Resin replacement is a cost-effective repair that can give your system years of new life.

    3. Motor or Control Valve Failure

The control valve directs water flow through the system. If it fails, the system will not regenerate. Fix: Control valve repair or replacement by a qualified technician.

    4. Brine Tank Overflow

If the brine tank is overflowing, the float valve is likely stuck or faulty. Fix: Inspect and replace the float valve.

    5. System Not Regenerating

If the system is not regenerating on schedule, check the power supply, the timer settings, and the control valve.

    6. Low Water Pressure After Softener

This can be caused by a clogged resin bed or a partially closed bypass valve.

    7. Musty or Salty Taste in Water

A musty taste can indicate bacterial growth in the resin tank. A salty taste can mean the system is not rinsing properly after regeneration.
