If you notice that the salt level in your brine tank is not going down, your water softener may not be regenerating properly. This is a common problem with several possible causes. This guide walks you through the most likely culprits and how to fix them.
Check for a Salt Bridge
The most common reason a water softener appears to not use salt is a salt bridge. This is a hard, crusty layer of salt that forms across the top of the brine tank, creating an air space between the salt and the water below. The salt looks full from the top, but below the crust, the water has no salt dissolved in it. To check, push a broom handle into the salt. If you feel resistance and then it breaks through, you had a bridge. Break it up thoroughly and let the salt settle into the water.
Verify the System is Regenerating
Your softener should regenerate on a regular schedule, typically every 3-7 days. Check the control head to see when the last regeneration occurred and when the next one is scheduled. If the system has not regenerated recently, the timer or control board may have malfunctioned. Try initiating a manual regeneration to see if the system cycles properly. If it does, the timer may just need to be reset.
Check the Brine Line and Valve
During regeneration, the system draws brine from the tank through a small line and valve. If this brine line is clogged or kinked, or if the brine valve (also called the brine injector) is blocked, the system cannot draw brine. Remove and inspect the brine line and injector. Clean any sediment or salt buildup with warm water. This is a common maintenance item that can be done at home with basic tools.
Inspect the Control Valve Motor
The control valve is driven by a small motor that moves the valve through its various regeneration positions. If this motor fails, the valve may get stuck in one position, preventing regeneration from completing. Listen for the motor during regeneration — you should hear a faint humming. If the motor is silent or making grinding noises, it may need to be replaced. This is typically a job for a professional.
When to Call for Help
If you have checked for a salt bridge, verified the regeneration schedule, and inspected the brine line without finding the problem, it is time to call a professional. The issue may be internal to the control valve, the resin may need replacement, or there could be an electrical problem with the control board.
